In this very first post I will show how to install the ESXi 5.1 on a host. After that how to join the host to an Active Directory domain as well.
1- Insert the ESXi 5.1 DVD and press enter.
2- Select continue
3- Press F11
8- Observe the installation
1- Insert the ESXi 5.1 DVD and press enter.
2- Select continue
4- Select the drive and press enter
5- Press enter
6- Enter the password and press enter
7- Press F11
9- After successful installation press enter to reboot the server
10- Now it's time to assign an IP Address. Press F2
11- Enter the password and press enter
12- Select Configure Management Network and press enter
13- Select IP configuration and press enter
14- Select Static IP address option and enter an IP Address along with subnet mask and gateway and press enter. In my case I don't have a gateway address
15- Select DNS Configuration and press enter
16- Enter DNS Address and give host a suitable hostname. Press enter
17- Select Yes to save the configuration
18- Now it's time to join the ESXi host to an Active Directory domain. Connect to the host using vSphere client. Enter the IP Address and credentials and select Login. I will cover the vSphere client installation in the future post.
19- The ESXi host has been successfully connected.
20- Go to the Configuration tab. Under you will see Authentication Services. Select it
21- Select Active Directory and enter your domain. Select OK
22- Enter the domain account credentials which can join the host to an Active Directory domain. Select join domain
23- The task has been completed successfully.
24- Now login into Active Directory DNS and create a new record. Enter hostname and IP Address. Select add host.
Conclusion: The ESXi 5.1 has been successfully installed and the host is also joined to an Active Directory. Now the host can be easily access by an IP Address or hostname.
